The Temperature of Poetry Poetry is one of the stranger parts of the literary world. A poem can be anything, from a three-lined poem known as a haiku to a giant epic poem like the â€Å"The Odyssey.† They can be rhyming or non-rhyming, long or short, sensible or nonsensical. Even lyrics in songs can be considered poetry, seeing as how they are rhyming and flow so well. The parameters for a poem are wide, the requirements few; but no matter what kind of poem you read, from Homer to Doctor Seuss to John Mayer, symbolism is the driving force behind it all. Symbolism is the basis for almost every piece of poetry written so far, barring some of the works of Doctor Seuss. One recurring piece of symbolism found throughout the literary world is the use of temperature. The warmth of the sun or a comforting smile, the cold of night or a dark hospital room, temperature plays a part in many poems and plays its part well. But the part it plays can vary from writer to writer, poem to poem. The three major uses of te mperatures though are to show the warmth of memory versus the harsh cold of reality, the warmth of comfort, and how warmth is used to show life and vitality while cold is used to signify harshness and cruelty. The first two poems to discuss are â€Å"I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud† by William Wordsworth and â€Å"Disabled† by Wilfred Owen. These two poems are very different in their subject, but their usage of temperature in the form of memory gives them a common denominator. Whether in the form of a friendly conversation, a publicly viewed discussion, a telephone survey, or any other form of communication between two individuals, interviews are one of the most common ways of generating knowledge in the social world. This essay argues that the key strength of the interview is its ability to draw out opinions that one person’s life experiences have given them. It explains that in the social world personal opinions are just as valuable as proven data and can be analysed next to physical evidence, or compared with the opinions of others in order to find answers and generate knowledge. This essay goes on to acknowledge some of the flaws and weaknesses of the interview process and identifies how they can be either†¦show more content†¦Quantitative data is better gained from research methods that seek meaning from rigid numbers and figures such as thematic analysis, or even simple data mining that extracts trends from hard statistical evidence ( Kroenke et al, 2016:233). Instead, in order to collect qualitative information, researchers must acknowledge the importance of interviewing as one of the few social research methods that can legitimately generate knowledge through ‘understanding interpretations, experiences and spatialities of social life’ (Dowling et al, 2016:680). As with all qualitative research methods in social science, there are both strengths and weaknesses in the way that interviews generate knowledge. Possibly one of the greatest strengths of an interview is its ability to be ordered by the interviewer to answer a specific question. However, this specific question is rarely asked directly. Instead, it is answered using many other questions which form an objective conversation (Berg, 2001:66). Simply speaking this means that, unlike a research method such as content analysis that generates knowledge from finding meaning in reports that were written in response to a separate research question (Sp roule, 2006:115), interviews can be set up so as to gain information relating to one specific theory (Priede and Farrall, 2011:272). Pleasantville seems to be a place of perfect bliss. Everyone in the little town lives a life of safety, happiness, but also ignorance. Outside of Pleasantville, there is disorder and unhappiness. At the beginning of the movie, David is the typical â€Å"loser† at school; he is unhappy with his life. His sister, Jennifer, is a promiscuous teen. All of these scenes are in color. In Pleasantville, however, before the town is ruined, everything appears in black and white, and all the people are apparently content with their lives. For example, nothing here can catch fire, and the firefighters only have to rescue cats out of trees. The basketball team always wins and players on the team make every single shot. After David and Jennifer are introduced to the peaceful, harmonious town of Pleasantville, however, the flawless, isolated, but ignorant community is turned upside down and ruined. When Bud tells Skip that his sister wouldn’t want to go out with him, for example, Skip suddenly can’t make a shot, and is thus unhappy for the first time. When Betty Parker learns about sex, a tree catches fire, and funnily the firemen do not know what to do, and only respond when they think that there is a cat stuck in a tree. Towards the end of the movie, people start to riot. They destroy the burger place, and they burn piles of books. There is total chaos and disorder. The original peaceful community is lost when the contagious disease of enlightenment, represented by color in this movie, is introduced. One could argue that this movie portrays change and enlightenment as a good thing, but there is also substantial evidence that this movie is showing change as a bad thing. Pleasantville exists in a delicate balance of perfect order, but when new things are introduced to throw off the balance, everything naturally turns to chaos and disorder.
